Amitayus – Buddha of “Infinite Life”
Sitting legs crossed in meditation, Amitayus —the Buddha of “Infinite Life”— is recognizable by the vase of longevity containing the nectar of immortality supported by his hands resting in the contemplation gesture. Amitayus is dedicated to longevity practices and is a specific manifestation of the Buddha of the West, Amitabha or “Infinite Light.” Works depicting him are usually created as part of long-life ceremonies, to increase the longevity of the sponsor or person concerned. For these reasons, Amitayus was particularly popular among great masters and temporal leaders alike. Unlike his counterpart Amitabha, who may be depicted in various forms, Amitayus is always represented crowned and adorned in the manner of the divine manifestations.
This small silver statue is inset with turquoise.
