Buddha Shakyamuni
The Buddha is seated with his legs crossed in the meditation posture, touching the earth with his right hand, while his left hand rests in his lap in the gesture of contemplation. He wears the threefold robe of the renunciate and displays distinctive marks that, according to the scriptures, characterise an awakened being. These are: the short, curly hair, the cranial protuberance, distended earlobes, and a mark between the eyebrows. This depiction of the historical Buddha commemorates his victory over Mara (the deity of desire and death), which preceded his awakening.
This extremely finely crafted statue, with its chiselled details and elegant drapery, is impeccably gilded which is enhanced by the contrasting dark blue hair.
