The Tibetan high plateau, between light and shadow, Amdo province, August 1994

The Tibetan plateau offers contrasting and majestic landscapes. The high altitude gives photographers the opportunity to play with the light, as in this chiaroscuro shot. Between the mountain ranges, grassy plateau stretches out where nomads herd their cattle. The rise of the Tibetan plateau is due to the Indian subcontinent sliding under the Eurasian plate. It is this movement of tectonic plates that has given the Himalayas some of the highest peaks in the world. This great geological and seismic activity has given rise to mountains of varied colours, ranging from white and yellow to ochre, red and even violet.
