Offering to the earth, Hor, Amdo province, February 1995
In the foreground of this image, a child wearing a washa hat made of fox skin looks defiantly at the viewer. In the background, at the intersection of geometric furrows in the ground, adults, accompanied by a cleric, are digging the earth. This is undoubtedly a ritual offering to the local deities and subterranean beings before any human activity (building, ploughing, etc.). For the Tibetans, the world is populated by supernatural beings, gods and demons, linked to the elements and nature, whose favors must be obtained and who must not be disturbed, on pain of reprisals (illnesses, bad luck, disasters).
