Young nomad mother in Sershül (Serxu), Kham province, July 1998

Holding her baby in her arms, this radiant young nomad is wearing a khater, the typical fur hat of northern Amdo. Wearing the traditional chuba dress, her right shoulder is uncovered because of the summer climate. Alongside farmers and clerics, nomads make up one of the main categories of the Tibetan population. Living mainly from livestock (yaks, sheep, goats, horses), they travel seasonally to graze their herds. Their traditional home is the large black felt tent. In many respects, the lives of these highland herders have much in common with those of their Swiss counterparts.
