Pilgrims at Labrang Tashikyil monastery, Amdo province, February 1995
This crowd of pilgrims is on the outskirts of Labrang Tashikyil monastery, the largest monastic complex of the Geluk School in the eastern province of Amdo. The faithful gather here for Losar, the Tibetan New Year. For the occasion, they are dressed in their finest finery, in this case a chuba adorned with colourful fabrics and wild animal fur. The young woman in the foreground is holding two silver butter lamps covered in a thin transparent cloth. This is the katag, the white silk scarf used to present offerings, welcome guests or pay homage to masters. Attending religious celebrations and making offerings during religious festivals allows you to accumulate more merit than in ordinary times.
