Manuscript cover with representations of Vairocana and six Bodhisattvas

The literal signification of Vairochana (Nampar Nangdze) is “Lightmaker”. His color is white. Vairochana appears under the aspect of the Sambhogakaya. His hands support the wheel, the symbol of the Buddha family over which he presides, and form the mudra of meditation (instead of the mudra of teaching that usually characterizes him). The wheel stands for the Buddha's teachings that lead to knowledge. The Awakeningleads to the dharmadatou, space of the pure knowledge of the mind beyond all concepts and duality. This wisdom is revealed when the spirit is totally free from ignorance. The four lions supporting the throne of Vairochana testify of the absolute fearlessness of the five victorious buddhas. When represented in the mandala of the five victorious buddhas, he usually occupies the centre. (His place and that of Akshobya are sometimes reversed).

Vairochana
represents, at the level of the purity of enlightenment, the bodies of individuals in their psychophysical faculties. The dualistic framework of Samsara being overcome, physical bodies therefore no longer exist when Awakening is reached. Their energy radiates in purity and freedom in the form of the five victorious buddhas.
