The representation of a Buddha on the giant cloth thangka exposed to the sunlight, Taktsang Lhamo Kirti (Langmusi), Amdo province, February 1995

Losar, the Tibetan New Year based on a lunar cycle, begins with a series of celebrations, including many religious rituals. These include the ‘Great Prayer’ or Mönlam Chenmo, initiated in 1409 by Tsongkhapa, founder of the Geluk school. The image here depicts a Buddha performing the gesture of teaching. This may well be the Buddha of the future, Maitreya. Prophesied by the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, Maitreya, ‘Loving Kindness,’ should appear in our world when all Buddhist teaching has completely disappeared. The photo shows the giant cloth thangka göku surrounded by religious figures. The crowd gathered around it is made up of many lay devotees who are also taking part in the celebrations.
