Crowned Buddha Shakyamuni as “World Sovereign” cast by a Newar artist of the Kathmandu Valley
This statue represents the historical Buddha Shakyamuni under his aspect as “world sovereign” (Chakravartin). Such images are often erroneously identified as Akshobhya - one of the Five Tathagatas or transcendental Buddhas - who also displays the bhumisparsha-mudra, but Akshobhya is usually not shown with monastic garments.
