Replica of the Kanishka-Stupa built by the Kushana ruler Kanishka I
The most famous Stupa monument of the whole Indian subcontinent during the First centuries AD was the Kanishka-Stupa built by the Kushana ruler Kanishka I in Purushapura (modern Shah-ji-ki Dheri, near Peshawar). Because of its very elongated shape, this type of monument is known as the “tower Stupa” and typically stands on a cruciform platform. According to the Chinese pilgrim Hui-sheng (travelled 518- 522) the Kanishka-Stupa was the “foremost of all the temples in the western Region”.
