Portrait of a Karmapa hierarch
The master is sitting in meditation posture on two superimposed cushions. His hands rest in his lap in the gesture of contemplation. He wears the monastic robe and is wrapped in a shawl. A conical hat with wide brims covers his head. This hat is the distinguishing mark of hierarchs of the Karmapa lineage. Traces of gilding are visible on the face, neck and arms. As the gesture of contemplation is atypical in the depiction of the Karmapas, this statue could actually represent Tekchok Dorje (1798 - 1868) the 14th Karmapa. There exists a painting of him in which he performs this gesture.
