Turquoises are mined around Lhasa, Ngari-Khorsum, Draya and Derge. Gems from this area have a more greenish hue than those from other parts of the world. This is due to the presence of copper in the aluminous rock. Turquoise is considered to be a very powerful protecting talisman, and every child will be given even a small piece of turquoise. As well as for jewellery, turquoises are used to decorate many objects such as vases, prayer wheels and musical instruments. Turquoises are believed to absorb energies, and that they change colour as the wearer gets older. Upon being passed down as a heritage, turquoises are believed to be renewed, and their original colour restored. Turquoises are also believed to possess medicinal powers.
